BRIAR ROSE Intertextuality & Allegory
Intertextuality: The idea that all texts are linked and we understand them better if we know the links. Why do we use this intertextuality? • Reference to another text creates another layer of meaning • Makes it more challenging and interesting to the responder • Creates an ‘experience' for the responder
Allegory: an extended metaphor whereby the responder is exposed to another story or interpretation within a narrative on a much deeper level. Why do we use allegory? • Often makes difficult subjects easier to understand • Enables the writer/storyteller to entertain while he/she teaches moral lessons or acceptable behaviour
