  2. Key Terms: • Open Range- a vast area of un-developed public land. • Internal Improvements- changes made by people, such as building of roads. • Strike- a work stoppage to force an employer to meet certain demands.

  3. Setting the Scene!! • 1800’s put an end to the cattle kingdoms. • Things such as Railroads, Texas’s population growth , & Barbed wire caused the end of Open-Range Cattle Ranching.

  4. Ranching on the Open Range! • Native Americans were pushed out of West Texas. • Open Range: a vast area of un-developed public land held by the state government for the future sale. • In the mid-1870’s, there was so much land in West Texas. • The ranchers determined the owner by there brand.

  5. An End and A Beginning • End of cattle drives. • Changes for cowboys; (Job Losses) • Strike: work stoppage. • The Big Die Up: Completely wiped out herds in Panhandle.
