    2. NCI Programs Used to Translate Research from the Bench to the Community ? Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR): small businesses, consultants, research teams ? Technology Transfer Research Program (STTR): non-profits working with small businesses & research teams ? Businesses – vested interest in marketing products

    3. eHealth SBIR Program Objectives Division of Cancer Control & Population Sciences, NCI ? Fund grants and contracts that translate cancer research into science-based, theory-driven, user- centered programs, interventions, simulations, games, systems, networks, and products for use by primary care professionals and the public. ? Promote the development of products that have the capability of promoting behavioral changes that lower the risk of cancer or improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.

    4. eHealth SBIR Program Objectives (cont) ? Produce products that: * have the ability to make a positive impact * have the ability to track change over time * are cost and time effective * will result in a positive Return On Interest ? Encourage collaborations with gate keepers that can promote the use of products nationally.

    5. Research & Product Evaluations To help achieve programmatic objectives, there are several levels of evaluation: ? Pre-award: Independent review of applications for scientific content and marketing plans ? Applications within the pay line: address & incorporate reviewer recommendations into research plans ? During the funding process: Continuous feed-back from study end-users ? Progress report reviews by Program staff

    6. R&P Evaluations (continued) ? Phase I Outcome reviews to determine if a Phase II is warranted. ? Independent evaluation of final products at NCI’s User-Center Informatics Research Lab ? NCI staff evaluations of final product ? Evaluation by an NIH-wide audience at NCI Product ShowCases

Current eHealth Research Areas of Interest to NCI Technology tools, programs or other products that result in: 1 Long-term changes in dietary, exercise and smoking habits 2 Enhanced self-awareness that leads to health awareness and responsibility for preventing or managing chronic disease 3 The capture of family health histories and related health information 4 Collection and integration of patient informatics into the workflow of medical environments 5 Increased knowledge of cancer care or how to conduct cancer clinical trials

Healia uses patent-pending algorithms and methods for machine assessment of quality and numerous other attributes of Web content so that the highest quality and individually relevant search results and messages are presented to the user. ¦ @neWorld -- A Network for Children with Cancer, Barbara Rapchak, Leap of Faith Technologies, Inc. – An educational and social support intervention that uses the Internet as a community-building tool for hospitals and schools.
