Farming . . . What is it? • Farming is the practice of producing goods by growing crops or raising animals. Farming is also known as “agriculture”. • 3rd largest industry in Canada bringing in $29 billion • In the 1880’s 80% of Canadian families had farm land, today only 3% of families have land
Crop Farming • Crop farming is the growing of plants. Crops can be anything from wheat to strawberries. • Most crop farming is completed in the Prairies
Animal Farming • Animal farming is the use of livestock, including anything from pigs to emus. • Almost half of all animal farming is completed in Alberta
Who decides what is grown where? • Natural factors that determine the location of farming: • Soil fertility • Amount of precipitation • Length of growing season • Human factors that determine the location of farming: • Cost of land • Transportation costs • Competition
