biome • Tundra
Permafrost • The tundra is not a plants best place to grow because permafrost (the permanently frozen soil) that is about a finger-length under the surface in the summer months prevents the plants' roots from growing as long as they need. Because of the fact that plants can not grow their roots out, most of the tundra's plants are low shrubs and trees like dwarf willows and birches less than knee high.
vegetation Some of the Alaskan tundra vegetation include: • Dryad • Poppy • Wooly lousewort • Labrador tea • And arctic birch
Polar bears • Population: About 21,000-25,000
Polar bears endangered? • Actually polar bears are endangered. Polar bear experts Predict that as the arctic continues to warm due to the climate change, by mid-century two thirds of the polar bear population may disappear. Rapid loss of sea ice is their biggest threat, besides poaching, pollution, and industrial impact.
Does hope still remain? • For the polar bears hope still remains. These problems can be solved by taking action by greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. And today, many groups have joined to declare the polar bear an endangered species. This way they can also come up with a solution to reduce pollution on the earth.
