TUNDRA The Alpine Biome Connor D
The Arctic Tundra is the earths newest biome • It formed about 10,000 years ago • Located at 55˚to 70˚North latitude, tundra covers about 20% of the earths surface • Most tundras are located in the northern hemisphere due to strange conditions in the southern hemisphere • This biome has a permafrost for most of the year, the soil is frozen 9-30 inches down Basics
There are two seasons, winter and summer • Winter average temperatures are about 18 degrees farenheit, while the summer is 54. • The shift from one season to another is very rapid • Desert like rainfall levels are usual, 6–10 inches fall per year • Due to a lack of trees and geographic area there are constant winds throughout the tundra Climate
Since there is a permafrost trees cannot root, therefore do not grow • Bare rocky land facilitates moss, heath and lichen Plant Life
only 48 land mammals can be found, although thousands of insects and birds migrate there each year for the marshes • There are also a few fish species Notable animals: -caribou -arctic hare -snowy owl -flat fish Fauna
Inuit people have been living in the tundra for thousands of years • They use ice to create food and live a hunter gatherer lifestyle • Modern civilization has reached only a few of these areas, where there are small villages • The land is not very resourceful, so it is not threatened. Human Factors
