All About a Tundra • An alpine tundra’s elevation ranges from 10,000-15000 feet and an arctic's ranges from 300-11079 feet • The tundra is a chilly, treeless, and snow-covered piece of land • Tundras experience very harsh winters and cool summers • Temperatures in the winter range from -18 and -50 degrees Fahrenheit; summer temperatures range from 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit • 5-15 inches of precipitation fall in the tundras annually • Harsh cold winds leave the high plateaus exposed to barren ground • The winters are dark and cold; in the summers, the snow and top layer of permafrost melts to create lakes marshes and bogs that are home to many insects
A “Soiled” Place Permafrost is frozen soil, sediment or rock Talik is unfrozen soil or rock that lies in permafrost region
Life on the Tundra Animals: Arctic fox, caribou, ermine, grizzly bears, harlequin ducks, musk ox, polar bears, and snowy owls
Life on the Tundra (cont.) Plants: arctic moss, arctic willow, bearberry, caribou moss, diamond-leaf willow, Labrador tea, pasque flower, and tufted saxifrage
Indigenous People to the Tundra Inuit • Sometimes called “Eskimo”, meaning “eater of raw meat” • They were fishers and hunters • Due to the Little Ice Age, the Inuit lives changed because of cooler temps • European whalers in the 19th century taught the Inuit religion but infected them with diseases, decreasing their population
Anthropogenic Problems a Tundra Faces Problem: Global warming is beginning to cause the permafrost to melt, which could drastically affect the ecosystem and its organisms Solution: Humans are making efforts to use more environmental-friendly products and alternative energy Problem: Lichen, a fungus that feeds many organisms in the tundra, is becoming contaminated from smog clouds created by air pollution Solution: Humans are trying to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted in the atmosphere
Graph 1 This graph represents the average monthly temperatures and precipitation for a tundra. The temperatures range from -15 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius
Graph 2 This graph represents the population size of tundra swan from 1955-1999. The population increased over time.
Graph 3 This graph represents the masses of different vegetation during the years of 1995, 2000, 2007 on an arctic tundra (Ellesmere Island)
