Summary of activities : • 1. Participation to the EFABIS programme - European Farm Animal Biodiversity Information System • 2. Participation to preparation of the EFABISnet proposal – An integrated network of decentralised country biodiversity and genebank databases • Liaisons with FAO and ERFP
European Farm Animal Biodiversity Information System – EFABIS • November 2002 - April 2006 : The EFABIS EU funded project - European Farm Animal Biodiversity Information System - to achieve full compatibility between FAO (DAD-IS) and EAAP databases. • 1987 - EAAP data bank established in the Institut für Tierzucht und Vererbungsforschung, Hannover • 1996 - FAO released DAD-IS
Project Management • General co-ordination: Secretariat of EAAP, assisted by WG-AGR. • Technical project co-ordination: Institut fur Tierzucht, Mariensee • Steering Committee: • one Representative of each contractor (n. 6), • EAAP-WG-AnGR (scientific advisor) • Representative of the ERFP project "A study on optimising the implementation of databases on AnGR and the utilisation of their content "
Major objectives included: • Full compatibility between FAO-global and EAAP-European databases • Exchange of data among all levels (national, regional, global databases, synchronisation via internet) • A template to build national AnGR databases, at no licensing costs • An expandable modular system
Major results achieved (1) : • EAAP and FAO databases data content merged in the new FABISnet database (35 species, 14,000 breeds/populations from 181 countries) • FABISnet is a network of country databases (Poland, etc.) together with regional (EAAP, etc.) and global (FAO-DAD-IS) databases. All databases accessible through internet. Automatic data exchange (synchronisation). • A template to build national AnGR databases, at no licensing costs (Web interface can be customised at country level + translation)
Major results achieved (2) : • Hierarchy of the network is reflected by a hierarchy of contents: the standard set of file of the FAO database are also present at regional and national levels. Regional specificities are also present at the country level. Country specificities. • Current status: • Polish database: efabis.izoo.krakow.pl • European database: efabis-eaap.tzv.fal.de • Global database: fao.org/dad-is/ • Software freely available under the GNU public license
Major results achieved (3) : • Options for Countries to join FABISnet: • Get a login at FAO or EAAP (European countries) site and enter data (official languages) • Setup their national Web site – web server connected to internet – configuration • Through syncronisation with an upper level , option to download all public data from other countries into their own database.
Major results achieved (4) : • Management support for improved data quality • Outputs
EFABISnet – An integrated network of decentralised country biodiversity and genebank databases -Council Regulation EC 870/2004 • Main objectives: • Setup of decentralized national inventories of AGR on the basis of the EFABIS database system, in 12 countries(training, installation, nationalization) • Establishment of decentralized national inventories of national gene bank collections, in 10 countries(training, installation, nationalization, organizing data collection and loading) • Development of a permanent management structure of the European network of AGR inventories, on the national, European and FAO level • Software development(production environment descriptors, geographic distribution, outputs)
Elements of Governance structure • Secretariat of EAAP: General co-ordination • FAO: Exploitation Manager, Steering Committee • EAAP WG-AGR : External Advisory Board (Steering Committee) • ERFP: Officially supported the proposal – Active collaboration and integration to be developed during the programme
