Tivoli Storage Manager NDMP Backup Setup Methods and Example
NDMP Backup Methods • Three methods to backup up a NAS device with the NDMP Protocol • Use a CIFS or NFS mount and TSM forever incremental • Use a fabric connection and tape drives with NDMP Protocol (similar to Lan-Free) • Use TCP/IP connectivity, NDMP Protocol, and TSM disk pools
NDMP using CIFS/NFS Mount • Pros • It uses standard TSM forever incremental backup methodology • All tapes and files are included in DRM • Restores are quick • Cons • Takes a long time to backup • Requires a CIFS/NFS mount to be established on a server different than the NAS device
NDMP Fabric Connection with NDMP Protocol • Pros • Uses standard NDMP Protocol • Backups are fast • Cons • Does not use standard TSM forever incremental backups • Requires tape devices dedicated • NAS device must be connected to same fabric as tape devices
NDMP with TCP/IP and TSM Disk Pools • Pros • Uses NDMP Protocol • Backups are fast • No need for dedicated tape drives • Cons • Does not use standard TSM forever incremental technology

Backup of NDMP with TCP/IP and TSM Disk Pools • Use scripts to run backups • Use queries to monitor results

Restore of NDMP with TCP/IP and TSM Disk Pools • Restores are done on a Window client with the nas nodename in the dsm.opt file • Fulls and incrementals are the backups so restores are the same • Ability to restore data until next full backup is ran • Best to restore the files and not the directories • Directory selection will slow down a restore because it reads through the entire tape
