District Demographics • Covers 2200 Square Miles • 1057 Students with IEPs (Not Gifted) • 6500 Total Students • 24 Students with Autism • 17 School Sites + 9 NN Headstarts • 4 Psychs, 12 SLPs, 4 OTs, 1 PT • 95% Native American
Program Year . . . • Program Year 1 for the 2ndtime. • Due to numerous snow days last year and changes in administration, CCSD has been able to address program implementation requirements for SY 11-12
Students with Autism • Beginning of Program = 18 (1 in 361) • Began checking local mercury levels • Pulled records for vaccines used • Looked at # of Math Geniuses • Looked at homes located near power lines • Listened to George Norros AM Coast to Coast radio for subliminal clues. • As of Today = 24 (1 in 271)
Areas of Emphasis for Year 1 • Autism Assessment Team • Autism Technical Assistance Team • Parent and Staff Training • Student Support
Autism Evaluation Team • Key team members received training in the ADOS, the “gold standard” in Autism evaluation tools. CARS and GARS CASL • IEP teams were trained on how to access the Evaluation Team for assistance and evaluations. • Result: Increased number of students identified with Autism AND quality information for intervention planning.
Technical Assistance Team • Electronic referral system – TIENet based. • Team onsite visits. • Research-based intervention responses based on actual observation and data collection. • Result: High quality interventions and some students be referred for testing due to inaccurate diagnosis from the past.
Team Validation • Lawsuit over identification and services • Team qualifications accepted by attorneys and results of testing and interventions administered were validated through legal challenge and subsequent IEP.
What about the $5K?? • Additional training • Resource and Referral website • Professional library • IPADs for intervention teams to electronically collect data and respond to intervention requests • Supplies and Materials
Future Directions • Itinerant Autism Teacher (Ability to spend multiple days in the classrooms) • Pursuit of ICP Model Autism Program • Expansion of website and tools • Expanded support on the collateral areas of autism, specifically cognitive deficit areas and extreme behavior. • PARENTAL SUPPORT for the 24/7 Home
