The process . . . STEP THREE Conversations with: Grade level teams Curriculum teams Team leaders School Council STEP ONE Visit to Reid Middle School in Pittsfield STEP TWO MSSAA email to Massachusetts Middle Schools STEP FOUR DESE Self-Assessment completed by grade level teams
STEP FIVE Scheduling workshop attended by Administration and team representatives STEP SIX Draft of schedule and team configurations developed, reviewed by teams and approved by School Council THE FINAL STEP Twenty-two 20-minute meetings with teachers FINAL ASSIGNMENTS AND SCHEDULE!!
ADVANTAGESSCHOOL-WIDE • Increased time on learning in Math and ELA. • Smaller class sizes in grades 7 and 8. • Teachers responsible for a lesser number of students; thus enabling more individualized instruction. • Teachers required to prepare for three classes per day versus four or five. • Addition of full-time Title I Reading Specialist. • Common periods, which will facilitate Title I tutoring, across grade level teaching and reaching all students who require remediation. • Embedded academic support. • Collaboration with Math and ELA teachers on team. • Teacher assignments with a greater focus on certification/content area strength. • Maximize use of instructional support staff. • Flexible groupings in Math.
RECONFIGURATION OF STAFF • Take advantage of staff dual certifications. • Hiring of Grade 6 Math Teacher (Elimination of one Science position) • Hiring of Grade 7 ELA/Social Studies Teacher (Elimination of one History position) • Hiring of Grade 8 Math/Science Teacher (Retirement)
