SOL Tests • 6th grade—U.S. History to 1877, Math & Reading • 7th grade—U.S. History1877 to the Present, Math/Algebra 1 Reading • 8th grade—Writing, Reading, Science, Math, Algebra 1/Geometry and Civics and Economics
6th Grade Course Selections • 7 period day • English (2 periods) • Math 6 (1 or 2 periods) • Science 6 • U. S. History • Health/PE • Elective
English • Two 47 minute periods • Pre-AP or average • Placement based on signing Pre-AP Contract
Social Studies and Science • Each class is 47 minutes • Pre-AP or average • Placement based on signing Pre-AP Contract
Math • One or two 47 minute period • Pre-AP or average • Placement based on teacher recommendation
Pre-Algebra • One 47 minute period • Accelerated math program • Placement based on meeting selection criteria
Health & PE • One 47 minute class • Every day • One week PE, one week Health • Everyone dresses out for PE
Electives • Choir-meets every day all year • Band-meets every day all year • Interest Block-new class every 4-6 weeks, may include: Art, Study Skills, World Language, Computer Skills, Technology Education • Developmental Reading
5th Grade Visitations • Cave Spring---Jan. 26 • Green Valley---Jan. 27 • Oak Grove---Jan. 28 • 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM • Tour school • Bring home registration form and registration book
Teacher recommendations will be marked on the registration form. Teachers will tell students date form is due back to them. Must have parent signature on the form. Make sure address and phone number are correct. Questions about recommendations should be directed to current teacher.
Choose one elective, Band, Choir, Interest Block, Math Lab or Developmental Reading 6th graders will get the elective they choose. HVMS will enter courses and give each student a list of courses they are registered for in Feb. Changes can be made at that time. No schedule changes after June 1

What is a high school AP course? • Highly rigorous course • Students may earn college credit • Students must do well on AP Exam • AP Exams require critical thinking and writing skills
What is a middle school Pre-AP course? • Provides greater access to AP courses • Exposes students earlier to skills and habits of mind necessary for AP • Content-specific instructional strategies to teach students AP-related skills, concepts, and assessment methods • Replaces most “advanced” courses
What is Pre-AP English? • Focus on reading material from a variety of historical periods • Learn to analyze reading selections • Learn to support ideas using knowledge of literary devices • Build and use extensive vocabulary • Learn to write in a variety of modes with maturity and sophistication
What is Pre-AP Science? • Problem-solving activities using critical thinking, writing, and technological skills related to real-life situations • Lab work involving more sophisticated scientific methods • Plan and construct research • Independent experiments • Document personal learning experiences
What is Pre-AP Social Studies? • Develop skills for writing comparison essays, change-over-time essays, & document-based responses • Evaluations use higher-level thinking skills such as categorization, evaluation, generalization, & synthesis • Develop reading comprehension strategies • Learn to analyze primary source documents
What is Pre-AP Math 6? • Apply higher-order thinking strategies to solve rigorous multi-step problems • Solve multi-step equations • Use critical thinking to analyze pre-algebra topics • Focus on higher-order applications of math concepts
What are the characteristics of students who will be successful in Pre-AP? • Attend school regularly • Prioritize tasks & responsibilities • Work within time constraints • Appreciate a challenging curriculum • Be willing to complete summer reading
What is the registration process for Pre-AP courses? • Parent must sign Pre-AP Contract—this will come home with registration form • Teachers will make recommendations
