Goal: All new teachers should achieve a high level of competence • First year of teaching should not be trial-and-error trial-by-fire • Teacher preparation as the foundation of the teaching profession • Ensuring all teachers have achieved competence in necessary knowledge and skills • Auspices are not as important as results • Alternate routes into of the profession should be judged by the same criteria as traditional
Standards: Assuring competence Overview of NCTQ standards • Accepting individuals with requisite academic strength • Ensuring that they know the subjects they will teach • Training and guidance in effective techniques (e.g., reading, classroom management) • Evidence of effectiveness and performance improvement Minimum core principles for assuring competent graduates We aim for productive dialogue about how to ensure all programs making these principles operational – and evidence needed to judge.
Feedback to programs: Appeals • Last year: • 54 programs appealed • Corrected scores of 23 programs on our own • All told, 68 standard scores corrected
