  14. Common Misconceptions • The goal is to have students understand the application and interpretation of charts, graphs, and tables. • The more they are involved in the process of collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, the better they will understand how and why graphical representations are used. The students will have to make all of the charts, graphs, and tables. We can’t use the ones from other resources because of the Characteristics of Science.

  15. Common Misconceptions • We are no longer teaching specific units. • Unit design will change. • The units will focus on themes or big ideas instead of activities and worksheets

  16. Common Misconceptions The curriculum is the instruction model. The curriculum does not tell the teacher how to instruct. It tells the teacher what every student should know and be able to do.

  17. Common Misconceptions We need to teach a unit on the Characteristics of Science (Processes and skills) before we teach the science content. Skill based instead of content based science education. You can’t teach one without the other. The Characteristics of Science should be the process and rationale used to teach the content. Characteristics of Science will be assessed through content.

  18. Common Misconceptions The textbooks don’t match the all of the Scientific Performance Standards. The science hasn’t changed. The method of instruction has improved. Textbooks are only one of the resources. ICT interactive sources cannot be ignored.

  19. Common Misconceptions All the tools will not be changed. We have to preserve the good stuff Unit design may change, but labs/activities/projects that can be used to connect students to content for better understanding are still important.

  20. Common Misconceptions Prepare students to ÖSS. Prepare students to subjects tested in ÖSS Prepare Students for Success in University and in Life. Prepare students to all necessary subjects present in a balanced curriculum.

  21. Common Misconceptions Prepare students to solve diffucult multiple choice questions that cannot be recognized in a limited time period. Promote Brain Growth and Development through an Enriched Environment

  22. Common Misconceptions Establish silent learning environment made of students listening and writing notes and memorizing. Creates Active Participants Rather Than Passive Observers. Allows Students to Use the Whole Brain.

  23. Common Misconceptions Teaching without Assessing Student Needs Teaching the Text Teaching the Teacher’s Favorite or Most Comfortable Topics Teaching Only for Some Children • Learning Life Skills • Discovering Connections through Investigations. • Learning by the use of Multiple Intelligences. • Meets the Needs of All Children
