  1. Kidney Dialysis in India The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that lie just below the rib cage, on each side of spine. Kidneys remove waste from human body, level out blood pressure, and keep bones strong. Kidneys also ensure that you have the right amount of chemicals like potassium and sodium (salt) in blood. Finally, kidneys make the hormone that causes human body to create red blood cells. Dialysis is a treatment that does some of the things which are performed by healthy kidneys. Dialysis is usually needed when the kidneys can no longer take care of their body's needs. Dialysis is a procedure that takes over a kidney functionsif those organs stop doing their job. Dialysis is a process to excrete waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly. Dialysis often involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned. Dialysis is used as a temporary measure in either acute kidney injury or in those who are waiting for kidney transplantand as a permanent measure in those for whom a transplant is not indicated or not possible. Dialysis helps the body by performing the functions of failed kidneys. The kidney has many roles. The main job of the kidney is to regulate the body's fluid balance. It does this by adjusting the amount of urine that is excreted on a daily basis. On hot days, the body sweats more. Thus, less water needs to be excreted through the kidneys. On cold days, the body sweats less. Thus, urine output needs to be greater in order to maintain the proper balance within the body. It is the kidney's job to regulate fluid balance by adjusting urine output.

Peritoneal Dialysis Hemodialysis Hemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis and the one most people are aware of. In hemodialysis, an artificial kidney (hemodialyzer) is used to remove waste and extra chemicals and fluid from your blood. The doctor needs to make an access (entrance) into your blood vessels to get your blood into the artificial kidney. This is done by minor surgery to your arm or leg. Treatment for hemodialysis usually takes place in a hemodialysis unit. This is a special place that is equipped with machines that perform the dialysis treatment. Special equipment adds the proper materials to purified water for the dialysis machines. The dialysis unit is also the place where patients can receive dietary counseling and help with social needs. However, if your blood vessels are not adequate for a fistula, the doctor may use a soft plastic tube to join an artery and a vein under your skin. This is called a graft. During Hemodialysis, a tube is attached to a needle in your arm. Blood regulates along the tube and into an external machine that filters it, before it's passed back into the arm along another tube.

  3. This is usually carried out three days a week, with each session lasting around four hours. How long do hemodialysis treatments last? The time needed for your dialysis depends on: how well your kidneys work how much waste you have in your body how big you are the type of artificial kidney used • • • • Usually, each hemodialysis treatment lasts about four hours and is done three times per week. A type of hemodialysis called high-flux dialysis may take less time. You can speak to your doctor to see if this is an appropriate treatment for you. Click on the "Button" below, If you have any Query/Question regarding "Kidney Dialysis" Ask Your Query Peritoneal Dialysis Your blood is cleaned inside your body. A special fluid is put into your abdomen to absorb waste from the blood that passes through small vessels in your abdominal cavity. The fluid is then drained away. Peritoneal dialysis is typically done at home. Peritoneal dialysis uses the inside lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) as the filter, rather than a machine. Like the kidneys, the peritoneum contains thousands of tiny blood vessels, making it a useful filtering device.

  4. Before Peritoneal dialysis starts, an incision is made near your belly button and a thin tube called a catheter is inserted through the incision and into the space inside your abdomen (the peritoneal cavity). This is left in place permanently. Fluid is pumped into the peritoneal cavity through the catheter. As blood regulates through the blood vessels lining the peritoneal cavity, waste products and excess fluid are taken out of the blood and into the dialysis fluid. The used fluid is drained into a bag a few hours later and replaced with fresh fluid. Replacing the fluid usually takes about 30-40 minutes and normally needs to be repeated around four times a day. If you prefer, this can be done by a machine overnight while you sleep. Kinds of Peritoneal Dialysis: There are several kinds of peritoneal dialysis but two major ones are: Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD). Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) is the only type of peritoneal dialysis that is done without machines. You do Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis yourself, usually four or five times a day at home or at work. You put a bag of dialysate (about two quarts) into your peritoneal cavity through the catheter. The dialysate stays there for about four or five hours before it is drained back into the bag and thrown away. This is called an exchange. You use a new bag of dialysate each time you do an exchange. While the dialysate is in your peritoneal cavity, you can go about your usual activities at work, at school or at home. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) usually is done at home using a special machine called a cycler. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis is similar to CAPD except that a number of cycles

  5. (exchanges) occur. Each cycle usually lasts 1-1/2 hours and exchanges are done throughout the night while you sleep. What are the benefits of dialysis? Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, has advantages and disadvantages. It depends on the patient and their kidney doctor to decide which of these treatments is best by considering his life style, other medical conditions, support systems, and the limits of responsibility and participation in the treatment program he desires. The patient must recognize that because of their medical condition, they may not be a candidate for one or the other type of dialysis. Each patient must see the two different types of dialysis procedures from their own perspective. Patients have certain responsibilities such as following a diet program, watching their fluid intake and taking special vitamins and other medicines to control blood pressure and calcium regardless of which type of dialysis is chosen. The major advantage for patients of hemodialysis is minimal participation in the treatment. However, patients are required to observe to a given schedule and travel to the dialysis unit three times a week. Stricter diet control and fluid control is required in Hemodialysis than peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis allows for more flexible scheduling and can be performed at home. The patient has to go through a certain amount of dialysis each day, but can change the exact timing of the dialysis procedure. 6. A major problem with peritoneal dialysis is infection. How long has dialysis been available? Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis have been done since the mid 1940's. As a regular treatment, dialysis was begun in 1960 and is now a standard treatment all around the world. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) began in 1976. Thousands of patients have been helped by these treatments. How long can you live on dialysis? You will need to have dialysis treatments for your whole life unless you are able to get a kidney transplant if your kidneys have failed. Life expectancy on dialysis can vary depending on your other medical conditions and how well you follow your treatment plan. The average life expected on dialysis is 5-10 years however, many patients have lived well on dialysis for 20 or even 30 years. Talk to your healthcare team about how to take care of yourself and stay healthy on dialysis. Do dialysis patients feel normal? Many patients live normal lives except for the time needed for treatments. Dialysis generally makes you feel better because it helps many of the difficulties caused by kidney failure. You and your family will need time to get used to dialysis.

  7. Do dialysis patients have to control their diets? Yes. You may be on a special diet. You may not be able to eat everything you like, and you may need to limit how much you drink. Your diet may change according to the type of dialysis. Can dialysis patients continue to work? Many dialysis patients can go back to work after they have gotten used to dialysis. If your job has a lot of physical labor (heavy lifting, digging) you may need to get a different job. How long will anybody need dialysis for? It depends. In some cases, kidney failure may be a limited problem and dialysis can be stopped when your kidneys recover. But often, someone with kidney failure will need a kidney transplant. It's not always possible to carry out a kidney transplant straight away, so dialysis may be needed until a suitable donor kidney becomes available. Dialysis may be needed for the rest of your life if a kidney transplant is not suitable for you.

  8. Side effects of dialysis Hemodialysis can cause itchy skin and muscle cramps. Peritoneal dialysis can put you at risk of developing peritonitis(infection of the thin membrane that surrounds your abdomen). Both types of dialysis can make you feel exhausted.
