Chapter 15, Section 3 The Rise of Modern Japan
An End to Isolationism • Tokugawa Shogunate had isolated Japan for 200 yrs. • No foreign traders • Only had formal relationship with Korea • Western powers wanted global trade
End of Isolationism (cont’d) • Millard Fillmore sent letter to J’s govt. (w/ Commodore Matthew Perry) • better treatment of shipwrecked sailors • more open trade • J’s govt. makes concessions to avoid war • Treaty of Kanagawa
Resistance to the New Way • W. was unpopular (ntlsm.) • Samurai led anti-West movement • European armies were superior • Decided to focus on Shogunate • Raided palace in Kyoto & restored power to the emperor
The Meiji Restoration • Lesson for us: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!! • Emperor Mutsuhito • Studied govt. in France, GB, Germany, and USA • Favored German system (guess why) • “Meiji” = Enlightenment Rule • 1st Act=Moved capital to Edo (aka – Tokyo)
Meiji Restoration (cont’d) • Liberals/Progressives emerged • L=stronger legislature • P=stronger executive • Democratic in form, authoritarian in practice • Militarism, education, women’s rights, & pop culture all became Westernized • Japan now considered a “modern” society
Joining the Imperialists • Another thing the West did was colonize • Took Ryukyu (Ree-Yoo-Kyoo) • Forced open trade with Korea
Japanese Imperialism (cont’d) • 1894 – Wins war with China (over Korean territory/trade) • Treaty: expansion into China, get Taiwan • USA and Japan don’t trust e/o…but why?
…but this way gives us something to worry about. The U.S. (like the Samurai) also better learn to BE CAREFUL WHAT WE WISH FOR!!
