Purpose Primary: To provide by Pasifika for Pasifika gambling counselling, information and referrals to gamblers and Significant others, in order to empower callers to make changes, to re-enforce the reduction of gambling and harm and to increase understanding of problem gambling. Services • Provide gambling addiction phone counselling support for the Pacific community • Offer Pacific appropriate counselling using a range of Pacific and mainstream approaches depending on the needs of client • Offer crisis management and harm reduction counselling, including interventions when necessary • Alerts and Interventions for at risk clients • Intervene if a client is at risk of harming themselves or another person or has intentions of killing themselves. • Police may be contacted. Services • Brief/Full Interventions and Ongoing Callback Support • Arranging to call clients back at a time agreed with them or the client calling the PI Helpline regularly. • Build trust and rapport • Facilitate the fonofale framework and other Pacific models for assessment guides • Enable ongoing communication in the context of extended family/multiple home environments and shift work. • Referrals to face-to-face counselling There are few Pacific face-to-face gambling counselling agencies so most referrals are to mainstream agencies. Difference from main Helpline Service Additional cultural approaches include: • Use of native tongue and cultural understanding • Establishing rapport through personal resources such as church and other relationships and understanding the musu and fakama (shame) callers may have • Use of stories, metaphors and narrative – an oral approach (talanoa) • Gender matching, e.g. an older male caller matched with a male counsellor Pasifika Gambling Helpline 0800 654 657

The Importance of Client Choice • Details of each intervention agency is given to the client. Selection usually based on locality and accessibility for client. • It is not GH policy to prefer one over another; client’s choice will always be respected. We attempt to reconnect clients to the same agency if they identify a certain agency. • Common client questions to GH counsellors include: • Who do you recommend? • Who do you think is the best? • What’s the difference? GH staff are trained to give the client all the agencies available, reminding clients that all agencies are trained to work with people having problems with gambling or being affected by someone’s gambling behaviour. Advantages and Disadvantages of Telephone Counselling • Advantages • Clients resistant to attending F2F may be supported by telephone until they are ready for these sessions. • Clients who are well known in a community may be reluctant to seek F2F counselling from services located within the community • It is a suitable mode of therapy delivery prior to or between F2F counselling sessions (Swinson et al, 1995) • Beneficial as a supportive net between F2F sessions (Coman, 1996; Flynn et al, 1993) Disadvantages - Absence of visual and non-verbal cues Pasifika Gambling Helpline 0800 654 657 Pasifika Gambling Helpline 0800 654 657
