Slide 11.3 Understanding Other Drivers Empathy = the ability to identify with and understand somebody else's feelings or difficulties. ‘Putting yourself in their shoes’ Empathy in driving: • Avoids conflict • Encourages defensive driving • Prevents collisions through anticipation Drive in a manner that you would expect from other drivers
Slide 11.4 Conflict Avoid becoming angry on the road, and angering other drivers: • Stay calm, and be aware of your mood and emotions. • If you are on a long trip, rest every few hours. • Don’t compete with another driver, or retaliate. • Don’t take other drivers’ mistakes or behaviours personally. • Avoid honking your horn, unless absolutely necessary. • Drive with empathy and courtesy. If you are confronted with road rage from another driver: • Don’t return aggression. Avoid eye contact and do not gesture back. Keep away from erratic drivers. • If you feel threatened by another driver stay in your vehicle and lock the doors. If you have a cell phone, call police. Use your horn and signals to attract attention. • If you believe you are being followed, do not drive home. Drive to a police station or a busy public place.
