  2. Facts about D.A.R.E. • D.A.R.E. was established in 1983 • D.A.R.E. is taught by specially trained police officers • D.A.R.E. is taught in over 40 countries • The D.A.R.E. Programs include Elementary school, Middle school, High school, DARE Plus and Parent Program • D.A.R.E. is a partnership between schools, police and parents

The officers in D.A.R.E. receive special training • Each officer must attend and graduate from a two week training program prior to teaching • The officer attends yearly state and National Training Seminars • The training includes updates on drugs, gangs, Internet safety, S.R.O., teaching techniques and a variety of other topics

  4. Local D.A.R.E. programs • Specially trained retired/ active police officers or deputies teach the program • A joint cooperation between the locals and the police/sheriff’s office. • Taught in schools that request the program • Over 26 million students taught yearly throughout the country

  5. D.A.R.E. is funded through: • City budgets • School budgets • Service groups • Fundraising events • Private donations

  6. The students in D.A.R.E. learn: • Decision making skills • Facts about drugs • The influence of the media • How to resist peer pressure • Ways to stay in charge of their lives • How to be good citizens in their communities

  7. Supplemental lessons are available • Bullying • Role models • Gangs • Prescription drugs • Internet safety

  8. In order to graduate from D.A.R.E. the students must: • Complete a student workbook • Have good attendance • Follow the D.A.R.E. and school rules • Be good role models • Be a good citizens (no bullying allowed) • Write a D.A.R.E. essay

  9. D.A.R.E. Culminations include: • Awards for the students • Songs and/or skits by the students • A drug-free pledge • Student(s) reading their D.A.R.E. essay • Attendance by community leaders

  10. The students participate in community service projects • Visiting retirement centers • Collecting canned food for needy families • Writing letters of support for our troops • Donating books to children’s hospitals • Cleaning and refurbishing local parks, schools and community centers

  11. D.A.R.E. gives the students wonderful opportunities • D.A.R.E. Days with sports teams • Discount tickets to local amusement parks • Discount coupons to restaurants and other food locations • Attend/ participate in special community events • These allow the students to participate in positive alternatives

  12. How can you help? • Make a donation to your local D.A.R.E. program • Volunteer to assist with culminations or events • Write letters to local officials in support of D.A.R.E. • Help organize a fundraiser for D.A.R.E.
