PROMOTING RENEWABLE ENERGY • TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE POVERTY IN RURAL COMMUNITIES IN BAMBOUTOS • WESTERN PROVINCE, CAMEROON By Boris Merlain DJOUSSE K. Engineer Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
OUTLINES • Presentation of ACREST • Some physical data of bamboutos areas • Energy and poverty in Bamboutos division • ACREST contribution to RETs development • Conclusion Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
PRESENTATION OF ACREST ACREST is a laic, apolitical and civil society Organization based in a rural area of Cameroon Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
PRESENTATION OF ACREST ACREST main tasks consist in: • Collecting information and know-how on appropriate technology from both developed and developing world; • Adapt it to the local social, cultural and economical context; • Demonstrate how it works; how it can save time by avoiding tedious handwork; • Promote its replication by local artisan, and diffusion through the local market Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
PRESENTATION OF ACREST (end) Energy sevice provider and a production center Focussing on 2 main categories 1-Renewable Energies Solar energy, hydo-energy, Wind energy,Biomass, Biogas and Muscular energy. 2-Sustainable technologies Pumps (water supply), Food processing equipments, transport, improved cooking stoves, Low-cost building techniques, sanitation, recycling etc. Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
SOME PHYSICAL DATA OF BAMBOUTOS RURAL AREAS • Hihgland region (800-2700m) • Abundant rainfall throughout the year (with an aerage of 1500mm) and temperature range in between 15 to 30°C. • Densed hydrographic network with numerous rainfalls Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
ENERGY AND POVERTY IN BAMBOUTOS DIVISION • Only 5% of rural population have acces to electricity facilities; • Up to 65% of public schools are not connected to the grid, with no access to information Technology • Up to 95% of water supply systems are out of use due to energy shortage. Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
ENERGY AND POVERTY IN BAMBOUTOS DIVISION(end) • Walking for 1 to 3hr to find a milling machine for maize, collect firewood or buy kerosene for lighting • Women spend several hours to cook with an open fire: three stones system. • Food processing equipments are rudimentary and time consuming. Agriculture remains the main activity. • Children walk long distances after school to fetch water or collect firewood. Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
ACREST CONTRIBUTION TO RETs DEVELOPMENT • Direct use of mecanical energy from water • Simple to passive water lifting devices Crossflow turbine Hubbson wheel Rope pump Noria wheel Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
Development of small hydro power (SHP) plans ACREST CONTRIBUTION TO RETs DEVELOPMENT • Installation of 2 Picco-hydro systems 0.5kw generator installed 1kw generator installed Construction of picco hydro canals Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
Development of small hydro power (SHP) plans (end) ACREST CONTRIBUTION TO RETs DEVELOPMENT • On going installation of 2 micro-hydro systems 7.5 kw alternator using a locally manufactured pelton turbine 30 kw alternator using a locally manufactured crossflow turbine Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
Promotion of other renewable energy sources ACREST CONTRIBUTION TO RETs DEVELOPMENT (end) • Solar energy: an experimental solar collector is installed • and working properly • Wind energy: A wind generator with locally manufactured blades is installed and together with the solar panel, ensures self lighting of a 4 rooms flat • Capacity building • Resource place for universities students In the library Enjoying simple water lifting pump Discovering the pico- hydro Using locally available resources for a reliable and sustainable development
CONCLUSION • Lack of capacity building and expertise • Poor access to technical and practical information and know-how • Technologies use in our rural are inefficient. • Poor productivity in allmost all domains and hence to extreme povety. • Thanks IN-SHP for organising this training workshop and believes that it will be of great interest to ACREST (cameroonians) as well as to other african countries. • Wish that more often such training sessions be organised.
