Personal Rule of Boris III (1934-1941) • Boris was determined to take back power and create peace • Toshev could not fulfill his duties • GeorgiKioseivanov replaced Toshev • February 1936 - Velchevreenters Bulgaria after being exiled • Velchev’s trial gave Boris an excuse to dissolve the Military League • There were still threats from other political groups • 1940 - Kioseivanovreplaced by Filov
World War II • September 1939 – start of WWII • September 1940 – Nazi-Soviet cooperation force Romania to cede Southern Dobrudja back to Bulgaria • Internal pressure for Boris to align with Germany • 3 March 1941 – Bulgaria becomes part of the German-Italian-Japanese tripartite pact • Boris still did not fully cooperate with the Germans • April 1941 – West Thrace and Serbian Macedonia are returned to Bulgaria as occupied territories
Saving of the Jews • October 1941 – Beckerle commands greater restrictions on Jews • Early 1942 – New legislation implements these restrictions • August 1942 – Law passes that Jews in the occupied territories are not Bulgarian citizens • March 1943 – Deportation of Jews in occupied territories • Campaigns in Bulgaria against the deportation • Boris repeatedly stood up to Hitler and refused to allow the deportation of 50,000 Bulgarian Jews
Death of Boris • 9 August 1943 – Boris meets with Hitler • 15 August 1943 – Boris returns to Bulgaria in ill-health • 28 August 1943 – Boris dies • Succeeded by Simeon II, Boris’ 16-year-old son • Funeral: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral • Burial: Rila Monastery
