Nouns • A word or word group that is used to name a person, a place, a thing, an idea, or a quality • Persons: Sharon, Major Brown, hairstylist, joggers • Places: Iowa, districts, Mars, Antarctica, library • Things: okra, Great Pyramid, toothpicks, merry-go-round • Ideas: peace, truth, artistry, excellence, beauty
Common and Proper Nouns • Common Nouns • Names any one of a group of persons, places, things or ideas and is not capitalized • Proper Nouns • Names a specific person, place, thing or idea and is capitalized

Concrete and Abstract Nouns • Concrete Nouns • Names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived (sensed, understood) by one or more of the 5 senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, hearing) • Abstract Nouns • Names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic (something you can’t physically interact with).

Compound Nouns • Consists of two or more words used together as a single noun. The parts of a compound noun may be written as one word, separate words, or as a hyphenated word.

Collective Nouns • A word that names a group • Examples • People: audience, chorus, committee, crew • Animals: brood, flock, gaggle, herd • Things: assortment, batch, bundle, cluster
