  3. What is a Mentoring Program? Program designed to advise/teach facts necessary to the successful outcome of goals chosen by the Leadership

  4. First Questions • What are the needs of those we are going to Mentor? • What are the skills of the Mentor?

  5. Needs of the Apprentice • What do you want him to know? • Is a Mentor crucial to the process? • If so, can the process fulfill the needs of the apprentice with excellence?

  6. What are the Skills of the Mentor? • Does he have the skills (technical, people, communication, etc.) to fulfill the needs of the apprentice? • If not, can he achieve those skills fairly easily? • Does he understand the expectations of the Apprentice and the Organization?

  7. Expectations… What are the expectations of the Mentor and of the Apprentice? Write them down and discuss them in advance of the first meeting

  8. Trust is the most important component • Trust • Empathy • Selfless Giving on the part of the Mentor

  9. What do I need to plan for? • Financial Resources • Volunteers (Mentors) • What do you want to do? • Education Program • Social Development Program • Organizational Enrollment Program • Career Driven Program

  10. The Final Component You need to have a system to measure the success of the program

  11. How do we define Success? • Training for Mentors • Structured Activities • Frequent Meetings • Support from Leadership • Monitoring of the Program

The Mentoring Relationship (or five things the Apprentice needs) • I have a need to know that people have expectations of me • I want a chance to try new things • I want to know I’m making a difference in the world • I want to know there is someone to guide me • I want to know I’ll be rewarded for doing good
