What does it mean to be“COLLEGE AND CAREER READY “? All students should graduate from high school ready for college, careers, and life, prepared to pursue the future of their choosing.
What should 8th graders do to prepare? Create a student portal account on Aeries (will need an email address) Review teacher websites Develop good study skill habits Discuss future academic and career goals Take challenging classes Be involved: Go on academic fieldtrips; Get involved in extracurricular and community activities
How to Prepare, cont’d Develop skills to develop to ensure academic/social success Take initiative: use the website, ask questions, speak with your teachers and counselor to stay on track Be responsible: when your assignments are due be sure to turn them in on time, study for tests, go to class prepared with all of your materials, be on time, get involved in the academic process, check the portal, choose your friends wisely Advocate for yourself: ask your teachers questions when things are unclear, send your teachers e-mails, communicate! Be more independent: rely on yourself, you are on your way to becoming an adult
BYMS 8th grade Promotion • To participate in Promotion Ceremony: • Be recommended for promotion • Pass Constitution Test with 70% accuracy • Earn 2.0 GPA in 8th grade • Cleared all fines and bills • Cleared all detention and contracts • Have no major discipline action pending • Have no more than 10 unexcused absences (3 tardies count as one unexcused absence
CHS Graduation Requirements • English 40 credits (English 1, 2, 3, 4) • Mathematics 30 credits (Must include Algebra 1 or equivalent) • Science 20 credits • Social Science 30 credits (World History, US History, Government and Econ.) • Visual/Performing Art and/or Foreign Language 20 credits • Physical Education 20 credits: All students are required to take 4 years of PE, unless they pass the Fitness Gram (Physical Fitness Testing) , and then choose to waive out of PE • Technology 10 credits • Earn 220 credits • Earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better over four years of high school.
What is a credit? • Credits are the points earned for passing a class. YOU MUST PASS THE CLASS TO GET THE CREDITS FOR IT! Passing = D or better However D will bring down GPA for graduation D’s are not accepted for college admission • 5 credits are earned each semester for each class • 10 credits are earned for at the end of year for each class • Semester grades are reflected on transcript • Transcript is the permanent record of high school grades
Understanding Grading Systems • Most teachers use Weighted Categories: • Here is an example: • Assessments 50% • Classwork/projects 35% • Homework 15% • Students must understand how grades are computed and the weights used to calculate grade • Review your grades through your student portal frequently
How to Compute GPA • Example 9th grade GPA from Semester 1: • English 1 D • General Science C • PE C • Integrated Math 1 C • Design C • How do you compute the above grades into GPA?
Grades: Why they count Placement in classes: CHS will look at grades in determining placement in 9th grade classes Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities: Must maintain a 2.O GPA (or C average) Your high school first quarter eligibility will be determined by the quarter grades you earn on the 8th grade quarter 4 report card. College: Must have a C or better in A-G courses Graduation: Must have passing gradeto earn credit Diploma: Must have 2.0 MINIMUM for graduation requirements Financial Aid and Scholarships: Grades may determine what aid or scholarships you can be eligible for

Why complete A-G Requirements? • Regardless of after high school plans, A-G will help you be prepared. • If you are going to a community college, you have to take placement tests— the higher you place the faster you complete the degree and/or transfer to a university • Keep strong study habits for use later in life and what you learn now can be applied later • You don’t want to limit your options to go to a university by not fulfilling the A-G requirements now!
Career Technical Education Career technical certificate programs prepare students for jobs in high-wage, high-skill and high-demand careers.
