These are the 6 critical components for college success developed by the National College Access Network (NCAN). The Alignment Nashville College Access committee collected data for a Gap Analysis Survey through NCAN using resources from a grant received by the Mayor’s Office. This survey documented resources in the community that we have around college access. Given what we know about our resources and what we have currently gathered through NCAN exercises, our own survey data on college access, and discussions with organizations in the community offering college access services, we have a good understanding of the gaps in our community. Each of these 6 components are ordered as if they were a timeline moving from aspiration to attainment. It is apparent that the first two components, aspiration and achievement, are being adequately addressed by community resources. MNPS, as well as numerous community organizations, are providing services and have a plan to meet these needs. MNPS has a curriculum in place as well as numerous programs, most notably AVID, that are attempting to meet the academic needs of a larger body of students. And Many non-profit organizations provide various services ranging from tutoring to college visits to help encourage students to consider postsecondary education. The NCAN gap analysis concluded that college access services begin to fall off as we look at the 3rd critical component and become more and more remote as we move from awareness to attainment.
We have designed the proposed college access program around the NCAN framework. The program we are presenting is designed to address these final four components. The primary focus of the program will center around 3, 4, 5.
