In the late 1970’s a strong conservative movement emerged in the Republican Party, partly in response to the dominance of the Democrats since 1932 • The Conservative Coalition was an alliance of business leaders, middle-class voters, disaffected Democrats, and fundamentalist Christians • The Moral Majority, an organization made up of evangelical and fundamentalist Christians who interpret the bible literally and believe in absolute standards of right and wrong, played a mjor role • The New Right that gave energy to the movement focused on a number of controversial issues: • Opposing abortion • Blocking the Equal Rights Amendment • Fighting busing • Reinstating school prayer • Eliminating entitlements (Medicaid, welfare, etc.)
