GME Policy 1.3. A. Post-Graduate Year One (PGY-1) Residents 1. PGY-1 Exam Requirements Quick Reminder “All post-graduate year one (PGY-1) residents are required to pass Steps 1 and 2 (CK and CS) of the USMLE (or equivalent exams for DOs) prior to beginning residency training, and must show evidence of that as part of the credentialing process. All PGY-1 residents are required to take and pass USMLE Step 3 (or equivalent exam for DOs), receive scores, and provide evidence of a passing score to the Graduate Medical Education Office by the last day of the PGY-1 year.”
The Before and After 2013 Instructions 2014 Instructions Will receive instruction during orientation to apply for their Step 3 Initialemail with instructions will be sent out 1st week of July • First email with instructions was sent 1st week of October • Therefore needed to take exam no later than March • FSMB needed 8 weeks to process and return exam scores, but usually it only takes 3-4 weeks
What’s changing Current Exam Restructured Exam 2 exams 2 test days 2 scores • 1 exam • 2 test days • 1 score
So, here’s the story • Last day to register for the CURRENT Step 3 exam is July 18, 2014 • Can take this exam in August and September • Registration for RESTRUCTRED Step 3 exam begins August 1st • This exam will be administered starting in November • No exams are offered in October due to the transition
The story continued • Those taking the exam on or after Nov. 1, 2014 FSMB does not expect to release any scores until the first week of April 2015! • That is 4 MONTHS later
New Requirement All residents will be required to take Step 3 no later than FEBRUARY 2015
Bottom Line • Window of 6 months to take Step 3 for the 2014-2015 FY August 2014 September 2014 October 2014 November 2014 December 2014 January 2015 February 2015
