Huo Yuanjia (1868-1910) • Considered a Chinese hero for defeating foreign fighters during a time of western colonization and influence in China.

6. U.S. Declares Waron Spain 4/25/1898 • Rough Riders- Led by Theodore Roosevelt, a fighting unit that consisted of Native Americans, cowboys, ranchers, and college athletes. • 9th and 10th- Calvaries were volunteers of the Buffalo Soldiers who fought at San Juan Hill. • Battle of San Hill Juan.

U.S. Abandons Neutrality • American banks loan money and war materials to the Allied Forces. • May 7, 1915, German submarines sink the British vessel the Lusitania, the dead included 128 Americans. • March 1 1917 U.S. intercepts the Zimmerman Note in which the Germans offer to aid the Mexicans in re-conquering New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. • April 4, 1917, U.S. declares war and joins the Allied Forces.
8. New Warfare &Weapons • Trench Warfare: The use of deep ditches as protection on battlefields. Soldiers would then rush out of these ditches to cross “no man’s land” and attack the enemy trenches.
WWI Weapons • Machine gun used in WWI • Tanks used against machine gun bullets high speed 4mph • Submarines were used U boats-underwater • Germany was the first to use submarines • Planes were used • Poison gas to but it was banned in WWI and still is to today

2. U.S. enters WWI in 1917 • Over 4 million U.S. troops were mobilized during WWI and many were sent to France to aid the allies against the Germans. • 10,000 Native Americans and many Mexicans Americans and Japanese Americans volunteer for service during WWI

3. African American Soldiers in WWI • 400,000 African Americans served during WWI • Many African Americans volunteered for WWI with the hopes that this would bring them first class citizenship in U.S.
Harlem Hell Fighters • One of the most decorated groups • Got medals from France • Because of their bravery and courage displayed during WWI Many African Americans soldiers received several citations and medals from the French government. • 369th Regiment( Harlem Hell Fighters) fought in the trenches longer than any other American regiment (191 days).
Henry Johnson • Guarded communication post with France German soldiers came and attacked 1 to 24 after his friend got shot Needom Roberts . Henry used his gun and a sword to attack German and Needom gave him grenades. Henry killed 16 and rest left. • Won Croix de Guerre- Cross of War • Congressional Medal of Honor highest Medal in U.S. didn't’t get it • But gave him the Purple Heart • 2nd highest is Service Cross and his son got it

4.Convincing America to Fight • Committee on Public Information(CPI) Propaganda campaign to convince Americans to join and support the war. • Espionage Act and Sedition Act Outlawed opposition and criticism of the American government’s involvement in WWI.
Vocabulary • Propaganda- information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc. • Espionage- the systematic use of spies to get military or political secrets. • Sedition- language that speaks against the government.

Labor shortage • Because millions of men joined the war effort, the U.S. faced a labor shortage: • 1.5 million women join the work force. • African Americans migrate north to find jobs. • Mexicans immigrate to the U.S. to find jobs
6.WWI Ends • Because of U.S. involvement the Allied forces defeated the central powers and WWI ended on November 11, 1918. • Battle of Argonne Forest 1918 was Armistice Day now Veterans Day.
