Properties of Matter Chapter 9, Lesson 1
How Can You Describe Matter? • Properties are things that can be observed about an object or group of objects. • Color, size, shape, mass, weight, volume, density, boiling point, solubility, etc are all properties.
How Can You Describe Matter? Mass • the amount of matter in an object • remains the same • measured in g or kg Weight • how strongly gravity pulls on the mass of an object • changes depending on the gravitational pull • measured in Newtons (N)
How Can You Describe Matter? Volume • how much space matter takes up • measured in mL or cm3 • Use the water displacement method for irregularly shaped objects • LxWxH for regularly shaped objects
How Can You Describe Matter? Density How much “stuff” (mass) is in a given space (volume) Density = Mass÷Volume Can be changed by varying the volume of the object
How Can You Describe Matter? Buoyancy • the resistance to sinking • depends on mass and volume of the object (density) Surface tension – the tendency for water particles to pull towards each other
What Forms Can Matter Have? Solid • Particles are very closely packed • Have definite volume and definite shape
What Forms Can Matter Have? Liquid • Particles move freely • Have definite volume but no shape
What Forms Can Matter Have? Gas • Particles move past each other very easily • Have no definite volume or shape
