Shoulder Muscles • Trapezius • Traps • Deltoid • Delts
Trapezius (Traps) • Function: Raises head and shoulders • Origin: back of the neck and upper vertebrate • Insertion: clavicle and scapula
Deltoid (Delts) • Function: Raises the upper arm • Origin: the spine of the scapula and the clavicle • Insertion: the top of the humerus
Back • Teres Major • Latissimus Dorsi • Lats • Erector Spinae • Rhomboids
Teres Major • Function: rotation of the humerus • Origin: scapula • Insertion: humerus
Latissimus Dorsi (Lats) • Function: moves the arm backward • Origin: lumbar vertebrae • Insertion: humerus
Erector Spinae • Function: straightens the back • Origin: lower thoracic vertebrae and top of pelvis • Insertion: back of ribs and upper thoracic vertebrae
Rhomboids • Function: (deep muscle) extends the scapula • (under the teresmajor) • Origin: thoracicvertebrae • Insertion: front of scapula
Chest Muscles • Pectoralis Major • Pecs • Serratus Anterior
Pectoralis Major (Pecs) • Function: Moves the arm across the chest • Origin: sternum and clavicle • Insertion: medial and lateral top of the humerus
Serratus Anterior • Function: Moves the scapula forward • Origin: upper ribs / side of the ribs • Insertion: scapula
Quiz • Name one of the two parts of muscle. • The place where a muscle is anchored is called what? • The temporalis and the masseter work together to perform what function? • Name two of the six muscles of the shoulder and back. • What muscle group works in a pair with your Lats (Latissimus Dorsi)?
Quiz/Review • Name one of the two parts of muscle. Tendon, Belly • The place where a muscle is anchored is called what? Traps, Delts, Teres Major, Lats, Erector Spinae, Rhomboids • What muscle group works in a pair with your Lats (Latissimus Dorsi)? Pecs (Pectoralis Major)
Arm Muscles • Biceps • Triceps • Brachioradialis • Flexor Carpi • Extensor Carpi
Biceps • Function: flexes arm (anterior) • Origin: side of the scapula • Insertion: radius/ulna
Triceps • Function: extends/straightens arm (posterior) • Origin: side of the scapula and the humerus • Insertion: upper ulna
Brachioradialis • Function: flexes the elbow • Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus • Insertion: radius
Flexor Carpi • Function: Closes the hand and fingers and flexes the wrist (anterior) • Origin: medial epicondyle of humerus • Insertion: metacarpals
Extensor Carpi • Function: Opens the hand and fingers and extends the wrist (posterior) • Origin: lateral epicondyle of humerus • Insertion: metacarpals
Stomach & Abdomen • Rectus Abdominis • Abs • External Obliques • Internal Obliques
Rectus Abdominis • Function: flexes trunk of the body & pulls ribs to pelvis • Important for posture • Origin: front of pelvis • Insertion: front of ribs
Obliques • External Oblique: flexes the trunk of the body and twists torso • Origin: lower ribs • Insertion: top of pelvis • Internal Oblique: Same as external, except a deeper set of muscles
