  5. Humanistic Approach • Key theorists: • Carl Rogers, • Abraham Maslow • Key ideas: • Humanistic psychology is a psychology that emphasizes the study of the whole person or Holism. Humanistic psychologist look at human behaviour not only through the eyes of the observer but through the eyes of the person doing the observing.

  6. Task • Get a blank sheet of paper, • Write down 20 statements about yourself, • Using 2 colours identify the ones which are positive and the ones which are negative. How many do you have of each?

  7. Task continued …. • What might have influenced your level of self esteem? • How much praise or criticism did you receive from others as you were growing up ? • Are you able to feel good about your achievements and accept praise from others or do you tend to brush it off?

Cognitive Psychology • Key writer: Wilhelm Wundt, Piaget and Kelly. • Main method of research in cognitive psychology were that of laboratory experiments which explored areas such as memory and sensory perception. • Cognitive psychology focuses mainly on the physiological processes which occur within the brain. • The main aim of cognitive psychologist is to gather an understanding of what makes people tick by understanding the processes which occur within the brain.

  9. Biological psychology • Key thinkers: Darwin, Gessell. • Biological psychology is concerned with the idea of genetics and evolution and how genes can essentially play a big part on individuals behaviours. • Biological psychologist believe that the DNA which is inherited by individuals can actually affect their behaviour i.e. higher levels of testosterones in females may result in highly aggressive behaviour.
