  1. January 29, 2014Semester 2 FIND YOUR NEW SEAT NUMBERS ON STICKER CHART AND SIT THERE STARTING TODAY • You Need • pen/pencil • Large sheet of paper scissors What we’re doing: • Making a new booklet for a new semester • Vocab and intro to first clay project

  2. Hand Building with Clay 1/29/2014

  3. Ceramics:Pottery or clay sculpture fired at high temperatures

  4. Vessel:A hollow container for holding something.

  5. Pinch Pot: Vessel created with basic pinching technique. Walls should be even

  6. Wedge: To knead clay before used to remove air pockets.

  7. Additive Sculpture: When material is added to an artwork

  8. Coil Construction:Long, snake-like ropes of clay used to make forms

  9. Slab Construction:Joining shapes cut from sheets clay.

  10. Score & Slip:Crossed scratches in clay & add water to join together pieces

  11. Subtractive sculpture: When material is taken away

  12. Carving Images or lettering that are cut into the surface of the material

  15. Leather hard Stage of the clay that is best for attaching pieces and carving.

  16. When you’re finished building…

  17. Greenware: Clay that is completely air dry but not fired. FRAGILE!

  18. Fire:process of cooking clay making it permanent

  19. Kiln:Oven that can reach very high temperatures

  20. Bisque:Clay that has been fired once but not glazed.

  21. Glaze: Thin coating of minerals which produces a glassy transparent or colored coating NOTE: Glazeware must be fired AGAIN before colors turn and become glossy!

  22. First Project: Elephants on Parade • Create an elephant using pinch pots and additive methods of clay building • All elephants will be standing on 4 legs • Our goal is to be realistic in FORM & imaginative in SURFACE • The building process will be similar for all of us, but details, surface decoration (carvings, 3D designs), and overall personality of your elephant are up to you. • Perhaps it symbolizes something personal about you?

  25. What’s next? • Turn in your notes • TOMORROW: • Clean out your drawer/find a drawer! • Return ALL materials you’ve borrowed. You should have nothing in your boxes but your paint palette • Show me your empty drawer and you’ll get clay. • Keep it moist & workable or else you’ll have to start again.
