  1. Zeus the early years

  2. The parents of Zeus were Cronus and Rhea

  3. Because Cronus ate his first five children, Rhea tricked him by wrapping at stone up like a baby for him to swallow and hid baby Zeus.

  4. Some stories have Zeus taken care of by the goat Amaltheia— • As a reward she was placed in the stars Capricorn.

  5. Another story says that he was raised by a nymph named Adamanthea. Since Cronus ruled over the Earth, the heavens and the sea, she hid him by dangling him on a rope from a tree so he was suspended between earth, sea and sky and thus, invisible to his father.

  6. After reaching manhood, Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge first the stone, then his siblings in reverse order of swallowing.

  7. Then Zeus released the brothers of Cronus, the Gigantes, the Hecatonchires and the Cyclopes. • As a token of their appreciation, the Cyclopes gave him thunder and the thunderbolt, or lightning, which had previously been hidden by Gaia. • Together, Zeus and his brothers and sisters, along with the Gigantes, Hecatonchires and Cyclopes overthrew Cronus and the other Titans, in the combat called the Titanomachy.

  8. The defeated Titans were punished by being sent to Tartarus. Atlas, one of the sons of Iapetus, was given a special punishment.

  9. Gaia was unhappy that Zeus had punished her children the Titans, so she sent other monsters: The Echidna and Typhon.

  10. This is NOT what Echidna looked like. She was half woman, half snake and the mother of Cerberus, the Nemean Lion and the Hydra. . .

  11. Zeus left Echidna and her children alive, but buried Typhon under Mt. Etna in Sicily.

  12. Zeus divided the world with his brothers: Posieidon and Hades

  13. Zeus’s symbols are all symbols of strength and dominance.

  14. A place sacred to Zeus was Olympia Greece, where the first Olympic games were held.

  15. Throughout the wars with the Titans, Zeus was helped by another son of the Titan, Iapetus: Prometheus.

  16. Zeus….to be continued!
