  1. WARM UP What is marijuana? List 3 things you know about it. What are some “street” names for marijuana?

  2. Today we will: • Identify how many people actually do use marijuana in the United States • Discuss some reasons why teens choose to use marijuana • Look at the Immediate effects of marijuana use • Look at the Long term effects of marijuana use

  3. PAIRS READ • Turn to pages 42 and 43 in your LS workbooks • With a partner, please take turns reading these pages • Review the information with your partner

MARIJUANA • COMES FROM THE HEMP PLANT (CANNIBUS SATIVA) • CONTAINS OVER 400 DIFFERENT DANGEROUS CHEMICALS • HAS A TOUGH FIBER STEM THAT IS USED TO MAKE ROPE • THC- Tetrahydrocannabinol • MIND ALTERING AGENT THAT GIVES THE USER A “HIGH” • USE HAS INCREASED RECENTLY AMONG TEENS • WITH THAT BEING SAID, FEWER PEOPLE USE THE DRUG THAN WE THINK

  6. WHY DO TEENS BEGIN SMOKING MARIJUANA? • With a partner, think of reasons why someone would experiment with marijuana. • Curiosity • Peer pressure • Look more grown up • Like the way it makes you feel • Anxiety / depression

  7. IMMEDIATE EFFECTS • Increase in HR • Reddening of the eyes • Dry mouth and throat / cough • Decrease in body temperature • Makes the person restless • Alters the senses • Loss of concentration • Impairs short term memory • Loss of coordination

LONG TERM EFFECTS • ADDICTION • FAT SOLUBLE- IT CAN STAY IN THE BODY FOR UP TO 30 DAYS • CHANGE IN STRUCTURE OF BRAIN CELLS • INCREASED HR • POOR BLOOD SUPPLY TO THE HEART • DISEASE (CANCER) • ALTERS LUNG CAPACITY (INFLAMED LUNGS) • HURT THE WHITE BLOOD CELL FORMATION NECESSARY FOR THE BODY’S IMMUNE SYSTEM • HURT THE MALE AND FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
