Labour Competition Ahmed, Michael, Yan & “Jonathan”
Introduction • Competition was used during the five year plans to motivate individuals • Alexei Stakhanov was the first to set the record • Rewards and Medals were given to whom exceeded the record • It is now known as the Stakhanovitemovement
Aims of competition • To increase productivity and rates of production from workers • Compelling management to adopt new production methods
The Stakhanov Record • A pneumatic-pick operator • A record of102 tons of coal, almost sixteen times the norm of 6.5 tons per shift • Initial idea came from Konstantin Petrov – party organiser of Central Ormini in the Don Basin
Incentives • Rewards and recognition provided incentive for workers to surpass the record • Ordzhinikidze, the commissar for Heavy Industry, had Stakhanov, the “Soviet Hercules”, put on the front page of Pravda
Results • Stalin called for Stakhanovism to spread “widely and deeply” across the Soviet Union. • By December 1935, the records achieved in heavy industry alone filled two volumes • During the second 5-year plan (1933–1937) labor productivity reportedly increased by 82%.
