The Arts of Japan Standard 7.5.5 Students study the Golden Age of Art, Literature and Drama.
Japanese Rock Garden • Built to create a feeling of peace and calmness • Buddhist monks meditated in the gardens • Gardens have carefully placed rocks, raked sand, and some plants • Often destroyed and rebuilt to show that life changes all the time
Turn to your “Asia or Elbow Partner” • Partner A tells B: Two things you already know about Buddhism. • Partner B tells A: Explain why you think one would create a beautiful rock garden and then destroy it. • WARNING… Be prepared to share your partner’s answer with the class
Calligraphy • Art of beautiful handwriting • A well-educated person was expected to practice it, including samurai • Calligraphyshoweda lot about a person’s education, social class, and character • Each culture has their own form of calligraphy (such as Chinese, Greek, Roman, Islamic)
On your sheet of paper write and answer this question: • “Why is the ability to write important?”
Tanka Poems • Oldest form of poetry in Japan • Unrhymed poem of 5 lines • Tanka poems capture nature’s beauty and the joys and sorrow (sadness) of life: The faintly glowing color of the maples, when it fades away before the falling of snow, serenity in mountains.
Haiku Poems • Popularized by a man named Matsuo Basho. • Haiku consisted of 3 lines of words with a total of 17 syllables (sounds of the word). • Has become the most popular form of poetryin Japan: Falling to the ground, I watch a leaf settle down In a bed of brown.

The Tale of Genji • Some believe that The Tale of Genji, written by a woman named Lady Murasaki Shikibu, is the world’s first novel • The novel is about the adventures of a Japanese prince
Noh Drama • The oldest type of Japanese play is called Noh, created in the 1300’s • Noh plays were used to teach Buddhist ideas • Noh plays were performed on bare stages and the actors wore masks and elaborate robes • They danced and chanted poetry to the music of the drums and flutes • Actors were usually men
Noh Drama Noh masks were usually worn only by the main character.

HOMEWORK • You will be writing a poem (Tanka or Haiku). • Your poem needs to have an illustration (colored drawing) based on the topic or theme of your poem. • Write poem and draw on back of Bingo paper from Teacher • Remember, these types of poems are usually about nature: mountains, oceans, snow, wind, plants, the Earth. Imagine yourself somewhere in nature: sunrise, sunset, windy, cold, warm, noisy, quiet. • Due Tuesday, January 18, 15 points
