Ballet Terms. Première - first Seconde - second Troisième - third Quatrième - fourth Cinquième - fifth Demi Plié - to bend at the knee, (heels remain on the floor) Grande Plié - to bend at the knee, heels leave the floor (except in 2 nd )

Dégagé- to disengage the foot from the floor with a fully arched instep • En l’air- off the ground, in the air • á Terre- on the ground • En Croix- in the pattern of the cross- front, side, back, side • Frappé- to strike or hit the ground • Adagio – slow, controlled movement • Allegro – quick, lively movement
Rond de Jambe- circle of the leg • en Dehors- outward • en Dedans- inward • Retiré- to withdraw • Passé- passed, the foot of the working leg passes the knee of the supporting leg (through the Retire position) • En Bas – down low • En Haut – High • Demi – Half • Grande – Full or Large
en Avant or Devant- in front or to the front • en Ariérre or Derrière- in back or to the back • Tombé- a falling movement • Assemblé- to assemble, jumping from 1 foot to 2 feet while brushing against the floor • Fondue- to melt, a lowering of the body by the supporting leg • Développé- to unfold and/or to extend
Pas de Chat- step of the cat • Échappés (Sauté)- movement jumped from 5th plie to 2nd plie and back to 5th plie • Port de Bras- carriage of the arms • Balancé- rocking step • Croisé- crossed • Jeté- extended jump from 2 feet to 1 foot with a brushing movement • Grand Jeté- is a leap from 1 foot to the other done with a straight leg “thrown” or brushed or a bent leg thrown
Seven movements of dance: • Plié- to bend • Sauté- to jump • Relevé- to rise • Glisser- to glide • Tourner- to turn • Elancé- to dart • Etendre- to stretch
