Critiques of good governance Prepared By -ArunAdhikari -SmitHingragiya -SanketDholaria -SubhanDantroliya -MeghalSoni
Ambiguous definition of good governance • Who defines what is good ? • Countries have been burdened with loans • Small and underdeveloped countries may not afford cost • The internal governing structures of the ‘global governing’ donor institutions, such as the World Bank, IMF and powerful governments can favour powerful stakeholders
Policies and programmes can be ineffective even in the absence of corruption because they are poorly designed to achieve their objectives • Need contextual understanding • Good Governance • Neo liberal thrust • Globalization • Tendency to depoliticize government • Reduce the art of governing to an apolitical and technical exercise
Privatisation of firms • Complicated Rules • Ineffective • Reliance on control rather than performance • Issue in monitoring system • Over emphasis on governance indicators • Good governance institutions do not guarantee automatic reduction of poverty and sustainable development
