Chapter 7The Strengths Perspective: Putting Possibility and Hope to Work in Our Practice
Understanding Resilience and Survival • People who confront harsh stress almost always develop defenses to self-protect. • All environments have resources. • People almost always know what is the right thing for them to do. • Human beings have an innate capacity for self-righting. • Healing and resilience almost always occur within dialogical relationships. • A positive orientation to the future is important for healing. • Everybody has knowledge, talents, and resources that can be used as building blocks.

Strengths Perspective • It does not require you to discount presenting maladies. • From a strengths standpoint, it is as wrong to deny the possible as it is to deny the problem. • We must be judicious and vigilant about the language we use and the pictures we paint. • Too often the formal and personal premises we hold shroud the complex reality before us and impede our ability to see the real possibilities. • Exposing ourselves to the clients’ views of their situation affords the opportunity to gain information and sustain high levels of client and worker motivation.
Appreciations of the Strengths Approach • Believe the client and believe in the client. • Elicit and affirm the client’s view of things. • Focus on change and movement toward client hopes and dreams. • Believe that somewhere within or around the client are forces for improving and healing.
Principles of the Strengths Perspective • Everyone and every environment has resources. • Life’s obstacles – painful yet source of opportunity. • Assume that you do not know the upper limits of capacity to grow and change. • We best serve clients by collaborating with them. • Care, caretaking, and context – taking care of others and self.
