IDIOMS By Alanna and Addison Mrs. Houston 4th Grade Britt David Magnet Academy
IDIOMS Well…. … according to Webster’s Dictionary, Idioms are, “A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words.” ……………Blah blahblah!!!!
What if Addison and Alanna show you some of them in a way that you can understand much easier? AHHHHHHH!!!
Well let’s get started…..
Well….. It doesn’t REALLY mean to DRIVE someone UP A WALL…. It means to irritate or annoy someone very much
This DOES NOT really mean pulling someone’s leg off. It means tricking someone as a joke.
Now this says just what it means….. To go from being very poor to being very wealthy.
THAT’s RIGHT!!!!! To tell a noisy person or a group to be quiet.
Well …. Getting ‘a taste of your own medicine’ means that something happens to you, or is done to you, that you have done to someone else. Kind of like TIT for TAT ….AND…. Medicine often tastes bad! YUK!
Being upset for something that has happened in the past or to hold a grudge or be angry…..
OH MY GOSH!!! DID YOU SEE THAT? IT HAPPENED SO FAST!!! If you do something at the drop of a hat, you do it suddenly and easily, often without any preparation
SO WHY DO WE USE IDIOMS? To make communicating more interesting & creative IDIOMS can add spice & variety to the ordinary They can also be used for emphasis ……………………………………… Without IDIOMS… language, would be pretty boring!
