  1. Mu2e Conventional ConstructionConventional MechanicalInformational Phase Value Engineering Review of Mu2e 2/14/2013 Emil Huedem

  2. Mu2e Conventional Scope • Conventional Facilities System / Building Utilities • Chilled water piping & meter (from CUB) • Natural gas piping & meter • Plumbing/Drainage/Fire Protection • HVAC • ICW (Industrial Cooling Water / Casey’s Pond) • Part of ODH (Oxygen Deficiency Hazard) • OTHER Process cooling system (not part of Conventional) • LCW, RAW, Tracker cooling etc E. Huedem - VE Review

  3. REQUIREMENTS / CRITERIA (surface bldg) • HIGH BAY • About 35KW LOAD TO AIR (about 50% of space peak cooling load) • RAW skid = very small CHW • NO ODH • 68F min / 78F max • Positive wrt lower space (when blocks are in place) • No tight temperature stability reqmnt • SOLENOID PS ROOM • About 43KW LOAD TO AIR (about 80% of space peak cooling load) • 6,300 CFM ODH • 68F min / 85F max • Positive wrt lower space • No tight temperature stability reqmnt • DATA ROOM • About 50KW LOAD TO AIR (about 95% of space peak cooling load) • NO ODH • 68F min / 85F max • >21% min RH • MECH/ELEC ROOM • Tracker System 7gpm CHW • NO ODH • 68F min E. Huedem - VE Review

  4. CURRENT DESIGN CONCEPT (surface bldg) • HIGH BAY • Indoor Air handler with • Chilled water coils • Nat gas duct furnace • Economizer • Single zone VAV • Resets (explore in design) • SOLENOID PS ROOM • Indoor Air handler • Chilled water coils • Nat gas duct furnace • Economizer • Single zone VAV • Resets • ODH wall exhaust & Louvers • MECH/ELEC ROOM • Gas unit heater & Ventilation Louver (roof or wall) • Place for HVAC serving lower space • Place for ODH intake fan for lower space • CHW, DWS & ICW piping entrance • Will house • Tracker cooling HX/pump • Glycol chw pump/hx/ tank • ICW strainer..etc • DATA ROOM • Chilled water CRAC with humidifier • Non-raised floor E. Huedem - VE Review

  5. REQUIREMENTS/ CRITERIA (below surface bldg) • LOWER • About 21KW total LOAD TO AIR • ICW to vaccum pump • Small CHW usage (?) • 7,000 CFM ODH • 68F min / 80F max • No minimum humidity • No tight temperature stability reqmnt • Magnetic field / limited space? E. Huedem - VE Review

  6. CURRENT DESIGN CONCEPT (below surface bldg) • LOWER • ODH exhaust fan & intake air unit (surface located and ducted down) • HVAC (surface located and ducted down) with chilled water coil/ nat gas heating unit/ Economizer (locations explore during design) • Sump • ICW line to watercooled equipment • CHW to one minor usage 7000 cfm ODH E. Huedem - VE Review

  7. TARGET AREA • REQMNT/CRITERIA • Decay Time: Airflow to meet transit time set (<60 mins) = equate to max 900cfm if discharging air near wye/pbar • Heat load to air @ Target area =small = ~6 KWmax (might just go to wall) • <50F dewpoint(OR <50%RH @ ~70F or<35%RH @ 85F) currently ok! • No reqmnt in remote handling & extinction monitor space • Space to be Negative compared to adjacent space (?”w.c.) • 7,000 cfmODH • Magnetic field • ~900 cfm 7000 cfm ODH Beam tunnel Remote handling ODH MUA • CURRENT DESIGN CONCEPT • Current scheme to provide DX (refrigerant based) system to provide 45F dp supply air, • preliminary selection with modulating hot gas bypass reheat • Natural gas heat • Exhaust fan at near pbar • ODH make up air unit in the surface ducted & separate exhaust fan • Need good air seal between DS & PS • Once through system- no recirculation of air • No air cooling in the beam tunnel DX AHU ?? Shielding Blocks?? E. Huedem - VE Review

  8. Misc Items • Final Load Criteria in Process • Ventilation in former PBAR area • More racks/power supplies in the high bay? • laser room in lower area? • Mu2e is committed to meeting the DOE Guiding Principle, where applicable • Some item -Value engineering • Bldg energy model- can use as tool during design • Commissioning E. Huedem - VE Review

  9. MISCELLANEOUS TABLES FOR REFERENCE E. Huedem - VE Review

  10. Mu2e ConvMech Load table (as of Feb 13 2013)excluding tunnel area, MC1 and former PBAR bldgs E. Huedem - VE Review

  11. Mu2e Guiding Principle Summary E. Huedem - VE Review
