1 DEFINITION OF A CMA LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
Certified Medication Attendant Unlicensed personnel who administer certain medication to: • Residents of intermediate care facilities & community homes operated by OCDD or funded through DHH • Individuals in programs/agencies contracting for services with DHH except acute care settings LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS

AUTHORIZED CMA FUNCTIONS • Deliver medications ordered by a physician or dentist to residents for self administration • Deliver & administer medications ordered by a physician or dentist to residents with the supervision of a registered nurse • Administer oral medications, enemas, douches, ointments, and suppositories unless otherwise indicated LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
AUTHORIZED CMA FUNCTIONS • Administer pro re nata “PRN” (as needed) medications when authorized by a licensed physician, dentist, or registered nurse LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
PROHIBITED CMA FUNCTIONS • Intramuscular, intravenous, subcutaneous or tube (gastro/NG) routes. • Oral inhalant aerosol route • unless administering a premeasured dosage unit provided by the manufacturer. • Reducing to writing oral or telephone orders from a physician. • Alter medication dosages LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS

CMA APPLICANT A citizen of the United States and a resident of Louisiana; An employee of a facility operated by the OCDD, an ICF/DD, community home, program or agency funded through the DHH; At least 18 years of age; Able to read, write, & comprehend the English language; Free of communicable diseases as documented by a current physician’s statement; & LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CMA APPLICANT • Must have no known record or history of: • Alcohol or drug abuse • mental or physical abuse/neglect • molestation, or • conviction of a felony LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
4 WHO CAN BE A CMA Instructor? LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CMA INSTRUCTOR • A registered nurse with a minimum of one year of clinical experience in a DD setting • may delegate the 20 hours of practical training to a licensed practical nurse with a minimum of one year of clinical experience in a DD setting • Must complete instructor training offered by OCDD once annually LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS

5 Roles & responsibilities LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CERTIFICATION PROCESS: CMA ROLE • Complete 60 hours of training • 40 hours of classroom theory • 20 hours of practical training • Pass a written examination • Demonstrate proficiency in 25 skills • Maintain good standing LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CERTIFICATION PROCESS: INSTRUCTOR ROLE • Provide the training • Complete required paperwork to request the written exam LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CERTIFICATION PROCESS: REGIONAL COORDINATOR ROLE • Administer the state exam • Submit exam and required paperwork to the state office coordinator • Distribute certificates to provider agencies & CMA LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CERTIFICATION PROCESS: STATE OFFICE COORDINATOR ROLE • Manage the program • Grade the written exams • Process the paperwork • Print certificates • Maintain all records LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
6 ANNUAL Requirements LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
CMA IN GOOD STANDING • On an annual basis each CMA must be recertified • 9 hours of in-service training • 2 must be on the agency’s medication administration policy and procedure& 7 on in-service related to medication administration. • Pass with proficiency the 25 skills on the practical checklist. • If initially certified before May 1, certificate expires October 31 of the same year. • If on or after May 1, certificate expires on October 31 of the next year. CMA IN GOOD STANDING Must not go longer than 12 months without working directly with medication administration in a facility, program, or agency for individuals with developmental disabilities LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
DECERTIFICATION • Falsification of consumer medical records • Found guilty of abuse, neglect or cruelty to the infirmed • Found guilty of misappropriation of a resident’s property falsification or alteration of CMA certificate issued by OCDD • Falsification of CMA qualifications • Failure to meet CMA qualifications • MAYbe decertified when • failing to obtain recertification • when performance is unsatisfactory LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS
