Dislocations • A dislocation is when bones are forced out of normal positions causing injury to your joints. • Usually these are shoulders, fingers, and knees. • Don’t move the joint ! • Splinting it. • Ice the joint!
Simple breaks • Fracture = break • Fractures occur when too much pressure is applied to a bone. • Many, many, many types of fractures. • Closed = bone remains internal • Open = bone breaks the skin • Types depend after that depend on how the fracture occurs
Ligaments and Tendons • Ligaments connect bone to bone. • Slightly elastic • Double jointed actually refers to ligament. • Tendons however connect bone to muscle. • Very flexible, yet tough. • Neumonic for torn tendons is PRIPE !
Sprains • A sprain is when a ligament is over-stretched, twisted or torn. • Protection –Stabilise the area to prevent harm. • Rest – Slows blood flow to the area. • Ice – Slows blood flow, relieves some pain too. • Compression – Slows blood flow. • Elevation – Slows blood flow. • Slowing blood flow reduces swelling. • The more swelling the longer the recovery time.
