QuarkNet and the Road to ATLAS • Masterclass in the U.S. • Near-term growth • Long-term collaboration Kris Whelan, LBNL (kkwhelan@lbl.gov) Ken Cecire, Hampton University (ken.cecire@hamptonu.edu)
What is a particle physics masterclass? • Web-based LEP event display data • Student teams work together on large datasets. • VRVS conferences: Schools compare results. • CERN production • Mostly European schools
Masterclass on the Web http://wyp.teilchenphysik.org/
U.S. Masterclass Timeline: • Dec. 2005 – QN staffers visit CERN for CMS week; Schuh and Barney plant an idea. • Jan. 2006 –Kobel encourages, supports and facilitates. • Feb. 2006 –QuarkNet site selected. • Mar. 2006 – Teacher and six students participate at BNL. • Aug. 2006 – Article in Symmetry
Ward Melville High School students prepare. • “Gang of Six” formed by QuarkNet teacher Tania Entwistle • Talks by ATLAS physicist and QuarkNet mentor Helio Takai • Practice and… • Analysis!
Down the Road to Brookhaven • Linked to VRVS in BNL education building • Worked with students from schools in Greece, Slovakia and Poland • Managed from CERN by Silvia Schuh
So, what’s next? • More QuarkNet involvement? (Avec optimisme!) • Masterclass in America? (C’est possible!)
QuarkNet - Status Current Status of QuarkNet • 52 centers based at U.S. universities and national labs • Entering 9th year of the program • Students and teachers directly involved in the building and testing ATLAS and CMS components.
QuarkNet - Future Plans A mature program, QuarkNet is: • Developing LHC-related materials for U.S. classrooms. • Creating more opportunities for: • Professional development for U.S. teachers. • Research for both teachers and students. • Students to do data analysis.
QuarkNet - Future Plans • QuarkNet plans to assist in the dissemination of ATLAS and LHC information to U.S. teachers and students. • QuarkNet would like to organize a masterclass program for the U.S. and possibly the Americas. • QuarkNet is interested in working with collaborations outside of the U.S., following the model of particle physics experiments.
