Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency Program at Greenfield Community College - (GCC) • It’s time to envision new energy sources. • At GCC, we’ve already started.
What do I earn? Certificate in Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency: a 28 credit course of study which can be completed in one year when enrolled full time. Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts – RE/EE: a degree that combines the 28 credit certificate program with courses that satisfy the AA in Liberal Arts Degree. Credit or Credit Free classes without enrollment in a program.
Classes combine hands on experience with real life situations. • The RE/EE program prepares students for real life challenges. • Field trips are required. • Hands on work is balanced with theory and science.
Faculty with depth of experience • Our full-time faculty have many years of teaching experience and advanced degrees. • Our adjuncts are working professionals. • Over 15 faculty from 4 area secondary schools have taken GCC classes, integrating sustainability content into high school curricula.
Non-traditional and diverse students • Regular community college students sit side by side with: • Trades people from all areas of the construction sector, • Laid off workers, • Second career seekers, • Talented high school students.
Developing Curricula • We started with two courses. • We now offer 25 including: • Intro to Global Warming • Carbon Cap and Trade • Sustainable Building Science and Design • PV, Solar Thermal, Wind, Geo
Yet more courses… • Piping and HVAC • Archicad • Sustainable Landscape Design • Extreme Energy Retrofits • Fundamentals of Wind Energy • More weatherization than you could believe…
Green jobs are growing and GCC prepares people for them. • Energy technician • Building Auditor • Cellulose Insulation Installer • Geothermal/HVAC Technician • Biofuels technician • Commerical Building Auditor • Educators
Weatherization and Air Sealing Technician • Solar PV Installer • Solar Thermal Installer • Home Energy Field Technician • Customer Service Rep for RE/EE Company • Project Assistant • Mass GREEN Training Coordinator
Flexibility and Accessibility • Classes can be taken for credit or credit-free. • There is access to college courses for community members, • without testing or other restrictions.
Looking to the future in curriculum design • The RE/EE field is changing everyday and we are keeping abreast of the changes. • We are expanding our curriculum to include BPI certification. • GCC and Franklin County Technical School are seeking funding to build a joint renewable energy training center in Turners Falls.
