Anthony Goicolea Photographer, Sculptor, Set Designer, Videographer, 2-D and 3-D Artist Jeri Kelly
Biographical Information/Education: • Anthony Goicolea is a Cuban American artist living and working in New York City • Pratt Institute of Art, MFA, Sculpture; Minor, Photography, 1994–96 • The University of Georgia, BFA, Drawing and Painting, magna cum laude, 1992–94 • The University of Georgia, BA, Art History; Minor, Romance Languages, magna cum laude, 1989–92
Early Accomplishments • Goicolea first gained international recognition for his unsettling technique of arranging, within a single frame, photographic clones of himself in various poses. • His first “Multiple Self-Portrait” series, You and What Army, was produced in 1999. This series saw him join together surrealism and fantasy with poignant social comment.
Inspiration • Goicolea exhibits an obvious influence of Cindy Sherman, who also produces elaborately staged self-portraits portraying different characters
Overlying Themes of the Work • Although in his mid-thirties, Goicolea portrays himself, disturbingly convincingly, as a series of pre-pubescent boys. This allows the artist to bring a sense of innocence to his often provocative images that portray childhood pranks, often charged with elements of sexual curiosity and experimentation.
Newer Work… • Goicolea has recently been producing and exhibiting his drawings and sculptural installations, which include similar subject matter to his digital photographs
