Memory and Recall • Memory can be assessed in different ways. Measures of recall test our ability to retrieve information learned earlier, as on a fill-in-the-blank test. Measures of recognition assess whether we can identify items previously learned, as on a multiple-choice test.
People typically recallfewer correct words than they recognize. • Recognition tasks reveal that we remember more than we recall.
Memory Involves Encoding -> Process of placing in memory • Information held in your • pre-conscious mind Storage -> Retrieval -> Bringing information to the conscious mind Recognition Recall

Short Term Memory STM Discard Long Term Memory LTM Factual/Declarative/Explicit - Semantic-memory of meanings, understandings—general knowledge - Episodic-autobiographical (times, places, emotions) Procedural
Primacy , Recency, and Interference We remember the first (primacy) and the last (recency)
Long Term Memory • Visualization • Mnemonics • Chunking • Multi-sensory • Elaborate
Memory Issues • Mind Decay • Disease • Interference • Chemicals • Context dependent • Physical Trauma • Severe Mental Trauma

3 Storehouses of memory What is the duration & capacity of each? Duration = time held Capacity = amount held 3 control processes of memory (mediating the flow of information)
