Introduction You were in the forest taking photos when you heard a crunch, crunch sound. So you say. “Who did that?” No one answered, and then right in front of your eyes was a Gorilla.
Can’t Find Me • Mountain gorillas live in African countries called Uganda, Zaire, and Rwanda. • They come in packs of 10.
Mountain Western and Eastern • Gorillas are endangered, and only 500 mountain gorillas are left today. • There are 32,000 western gorillas. There are fewer then 5,000 eastern gorillas. • There are3 different types: the western lowland, eastern lowland, and the mountain gorilla. • The silverback is the biggest, oldest and very strong. • A young silverback is called a black back. • Gorillas have dark fur, and they are big and hairy. • They weigh about 450 pounds. • They are about 6 feet tall, and they live up to 50 years old.
Herbivores • They eat leaves, fruit, berries, bamboo shoots, insects, snails, and slugs. • They are herbivores (herbivores are animals that eat plants but no meat.) • Gorillas say, “Naoom,” when something tastes good.
Cool Abilities • To scare predators away they stand up and beat their chests with their hands. • Gorillas have big teeth and jaws , and gorillas need them to eat tough leaves and stems.
Fun Facts • They are very big mammals. • Gorillas, monkeys, and people are primates.(Primates are a type of mammal with hands that grasp, eyes set close together in the front of the face, and a large brain.) • The male is 2 times as big as the female. • Gorillas are being shot by people, and the people cut their heads, hands, and feet for trophies. • Back then people said gorillas eat people. • Gorillas can get caught in traps for smaller animals. • Sometimes gorillas make nests in trees.
