At the end of syllabus teaching, pupils should be able to • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific facts, concepts and principles • apply scientific facts and concepts to new situations • use process skills such as observing, classifying, communicating, using apparatus and equipment, interpreting information, controlling variables and planning investigations. Science Curriculum and Aim The Science curriculum seeks to nurture the student as an INQUIRER. End Goal Students to enjoy science and value science as an important tool in helping them explore their natural and physical world.
Attitude in Science It is important to have the right attitude in Science learning. The Science programmes aims to develop pupils’ curiosity, teamwork, perseverance, initiative and responsibility
PSLE / Semestral Exam Format (Standard Science) • Booklet A (60 marks) • Multiple-Choice Questions • 30 Questions - 2 marks each Exam Format • Booklet B (40 marks) • Open-ended • 14 Questions-2, 3 or 4 marks per question Total marks – 100 marks Duration of paper- 1 hour 45 minutes
PSLE / Semestral Exam Format (Foundation Science) • Booklet A (32 marks) • Multiple-Choice Questions • 16 Questions - 2 marks each Exam Format • Booklet B (38 marks) • Structured Questions (Short Qns) 14% (6-8 qns : 2-3 marks per qn) • Open-ended questions (Long Qns) 24% (6-8 qns : 2-4 marks per qn) Duration of paper- 1 hour 15 minutes
Examination topicsinclude the syllabus from Primary 3 to Primary 6. (Life Science and Physical Science topics) Examplesof questions tested can be found in the PSLE practice booklet for Standard Science.
Life Science Topics (Standard Science) • Diversity of living things (General characteristics and classification) • Life cycles, reproduction in plants and animals • Plant system -Plant parts, functions, respiratory and circulatory systems • Human system- digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems • Cell system • Interaction within the environment • Energy forms and uses (photosynthesis)
Physical Science Topics (Standard Science) • Diversity of living things (General characteristics and classification) • Diversity of materials • Cycles in matter and water • Electrical system • Interaction of forces (magnets, frictional force, gravitational force and force in springs) • Energy forms and uses (heat and light) • Energy conversion
Dates to note Term 1 • Mock Term test (P6 topics only) - Week 8 beginning 24 March 2014 Term 2 • SA1 - Week 8
Dates to note June Holidays • Supplementary during 1st week • Completion of P6 syllabus Term 3 • Revision of P6 chapters doing PSLE questions • Week 6 – Science Prelims Written Exam
