  2. SPONGE This is due at 20 minutes after the hour. HW needs to be turned in at the green tray Write a paragraph using at least 5 gerunds. Circle the gerunds and underline the gerund phrases. Make your paragraph entertaining! The most entertaining one (out of the ones chosen) will receive a HW pass tonight!

  3. ACTIVATOR • Now, we’ll listen to some of our favorite songs by some of our favorite artists. Can you identify the hook in their songs? • Fist Pump Competition! • The table that identifies the hook of the song by fist pumping in unison first gets a point. The most points wins a surprise!!

  4. WORK SESSION • Review yesterday’s content: • Hooks • TAPP • Topic focused on convincing teens NOT to smoke.

  7. Ask the reader a question. • Use a catchy phrase or quote. • Create a tongue twister. • Create a bold statement!!! (exclamatory) • Use a lead in sentence that entices the reader to read on. The Hook To catch the reader, use a hook in the introductory paragraph.

  8. The Hook • The introductory paragraph begins with the hook, which combines with the topic sentence (thesis statement) to form the first sentence. • The topic sentence (thesis statement)can also directly follow the hook in the introductory paragraph.

The 3-Sentence Introduction Writing Prompt- Each year many people lose their lives to the effects of smoking tobacco and it costs the families and our country billions of dollars in hospital expenses. What are the effects of tobacco smoke on a persons’ health.   10. The 3-Sentence Introduction • STEP 2: Select a Hook to draw in your intended audience and fit the purpose of your response. • Question: • Do you want to spend the rest of your life in a hospital? • Why isn’t smoking cigarettes illegal? • Who would want to smell like a cigarette? • Etc.

The 3-Sentence Introduction • STEP 3: Write your thesis • Restate the topic with your claim (opinion/point of view) and include your reasons for that claim (usually 3). • Smoking has a negative effect on teens because it leads to health problems, yellowing of the teeth, and even body odor. • STEP 4: Write your Transitional Sentence • This is the sentence that bridges the gap between the hook and the thesis.

Smoking has a negative effect on teens because it leads to health problems, yellowing of the teeth, and even body odor.
